Preliminary Sketch for the first Diagrammatic Tube Map - Harry Beck, 1931. Something that is so simple to us now was not always so simple. Beck’s sketchbook study shows him grappling with the a new system of representing the underground tube network, using only 90 and 45 degree angles and no topographical references but an abstract River Thames.
